BATON ROUGE, La. – The No. 20 LSU women’s swimming and diving (9-1, 2-1 SEC) returns to the pool for the regular season finale in the annual quad meet against Houston, Rice and Tulane Friday and Saturday at the University of Houston Recreation Center.
Competition begins Friday at 5 p.m. between the four teams. On the final day of competition, things get started at 10 a.m. Live results for both days will be available at uhcougars.com/livestats.
“I am excited for the last competition before our conference meet,” swimming coach Dave Geyer said. “With the training progression we are in, our women should be pretty sharp, and they have a great opportunity to fine tune their racing details before the final preparation for SEC’s.”
LSU has carried the momentum of the fall into 2016 and the month of January. The Lady Tigers are 3-1 this month with victories over No. 19 Missouri, Kentucky and Virginia Tech. Last weekend, LSU fell to No. 6 Texas A&M in the final home meet of the season.
Cassie Weil, Madison Sthamann and Allie Alter lead the way for the women on the boards. Weil already has 10 wins this season combined between platform and three-meter.
Kara Kopcso is the top swimmer for the Lady tigers. The junior has been named SEC Female Swimmer of the Week twice this season. Last week against the Aggies, Kopcso finished second in the 100 fly and 200 fly and third in the 200 IM.
Junior Leah Troskot has impressed this month with six individual victories in three meets. Troskot has swept the 50 free and 100 free against Kentucky, Virginia tech, Missouri and most recently against Texas A&M.
Swimmers Megan Cox and Colleen O’Neil have also been a strong spots for the Lady Tigers. Last week, Cox finished first in the 200 free and second in the 100 free. O’Neil finished second in the 100 breast and was a part of the 200-medley relay team that earned the win over the Aggies.
“The format for the meet is great because it allows for quality racing spread out over two days,” Geyer added. “It’s a great competition knowing that our opponents are phasing into their championship season preparation as well.”
