BATON ROUGE – LSU Athletics and men’s basketball coach Johnny Jones announced on Thursday that the papers had been received and approved for the fall signing period’s second basketball signee, Wayde Sims of University High School.
The 6-6 forward was the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Louisiana this past season.
Sims, whose father Wayne Sims played at LSU from 1987-91, averaged 17.6 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game while leading U-High to the state championship. He shot 62 percent from the field last season and was the MVP of the state AAA title game. Sims was also the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class AAA MVP as U-High won state for the second straight year.
His father, Wayne, was recruited by then LSU Head Coach Dale Brown and assistant coach Jones, now about to start his fourth year as head coach at LSU.
“We are excited about the signing and addition of Wayde Sims,” said Jones, as Sims joins Australian Kieran Hayward as signees whose letters have arrived at LSU and been approved as of Thursday afternoon. “He has a great balance on both ends of the floor with the ability to score inside and out and will also create opportunities for his teammates on the offensive end. On the defensive end he has the strength, power and ability to defend inside and on the perimeter. We feel that as a freshman he will make an immediate impact on our team.”
