The Tigers (10-4-3, 4-4-1 SEC) took a big step toward postseason qualification with their 1-0 win over Mississippi State on Friday night as they moved up three spots into seventh place on the SEC table with 13 points for their efforts. With a win on Sunday, they would leapfrog the Gamecocks (11-4-1, 5-3-1) into sixth place in the SEC standings while clinching an SEC Tournament berth.
LSU has hit its stride down the homestretch of the season while picking up 10 of the 15 points on offer in its last five SEC matches, including a pair of 1-0 wins over Arkansas and Mississippi State in their last two.
South Carolina makes the trip to Baton Rouge ranked as high as No. 17 nationally in both the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 and TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25 polls. The Gamecocks will be looking to snap a three-game losing skid in SEC play as they followed a 2-0 defeat at Ole Miss on Oct. 11 with a pair of 2-1 overtime defeats at home to Vanderbilt on Oct. 16 and at Florida on Thursday night.
The Tigers are looking to snap a four-game losing skid of their own in the regular season in the series as they have not defeated the Gamecocks since a 1-0 home win on Oct. 25, 2009, en route to a runner-up finish that season in the final SEC standings. The sides have also played to a pair of 1-1 draws in the SEC Tournaments since 2009 with South Carolina emerging on penalties both times.
Ten seniors make their final appearance in an LSU uniform at the LSU Soccer Stadium on Sunday as Alex Arlitt, Gracie Campbell, Lexi Gibbs, Natalia Gomez-Junco, Heather Magee, Mariel McLaughlin, Emma Meckfessel, Fernanda Pina, Catalina Rubiano and Morgan Ruhl will be honored as part of Senior Day festivities prior to kickoff.
After playing host to the Gamecocks in their home finale on Sunday afternoon, the Tigers will travel to Lexington, Kentucky, next Thursday night to wrap up their 2015 regular season with a match against Kentucky that is set to kick off at 5:30 p.m. CT on the SEC Network+. LSU will compete in its final two regular-season matches to claim the necessary points to lock up an SEC Tournament berth for the event that returns to the Orange Beach Sportsplex in Orange Beach, Alabama, from Nov. 2-8.
