TULSA, Okla. – LSU’s Justin Butch, in the second round of qualifiers in the ITA All-American tournament, emerged victorious over his opponent.
Butsch faced TCU’s Jerry Lopez and showed lots of promise in the first set winning 7-5. In the second set Butsch fell 2-6 but was able to overcome it to take the match with a 7-5 victory in the third.
“Justin had a good win this morning,” Assistant Coach Danny Bryan said. “At the back end of the first and third set he really played his best, which is what we want. We are getting better as the tournament goes on and we are looking forward to tomorrow.”
Wednesday, Butsch will face No. 109 Edoardo Tessaro of Virginia Tech in the final round of the ITA All-American Qualifiers.
Tuesday also marked the start of doubles play with two LSU duos competing. Butsch and partner Tam Trinh faced Sam Monette and Daniel Bednarczyk of Indiana, winning both sets 6-4.
Along with Trinh and Butsch, Simon Freund and Gabor Csonka faced the University of Virginia’s J.C. Aragone and Luca Corinteli and defeated them 6-3, 6-4. The duo advanced to the second round but fell to Jocelyn Devilliers and Tin Ostojic of Wichita State 6-4, 6-4.
“It was their first time playing together and they had a great win in the first round against Virginia,” Assistant Coach Danny Bryan said. “Corinteli is part of the No. 2 team in the country and Aragone is a very good player as well. We saw a lot of good things from Gabor and Simon and we are looking to build on them.”
