Joneses Sweep Medals in NACAC 100 Hurdles

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Former LSU hurdle stars Lolo Jones and Tenaya Jones became the latest former Lady Tigers to climb the medal podium at this weekend’s North American, Central American and Caribbean Senior Championships as they swept the gold and silver medals in the women’s 100-meter hurdles on Saturday at Costa Rica’s National Stadium.

Lolo Jones, a two-time Olympic finalist in the event, struck NACAC gold with a winning wind-aided time of 12.63 seconds in Saturday’s final, while Tenaya Jones followed closely behind while securing the silver medal in 12.68w to give the United States the top two spots on the medal podium. Kierre Beckles of Barbados won the bronze medal in the event with her time of 12.88w in the final.

Their sweep of the gold and silver medals in the final of the sprint hurdles came just one day after former Lady Tiger All-American Lynnika Pitts won the bronze medal in the women’s triple jump for Team USA.

The two former Lady Tigers were the class of the field as Canada’s Christie Moerman finished just outside the medal positions in fourth place with her wind-aided time of 12.91 followed by Dominican Republic’s Idlette Lavonne (13.01w) in fifth place, Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton (13.01w) in sixth place, Barbados’ Akela Jones (13.08w) in seventh place and Trinidad & Tobago’s Deborah John (13.42w) in eighth place.

By hurdling to the gold medal at this year’s NACAC Senior Championships, Lolo Jones won her third major international medal for the United States as she has also twice been crowned the World Indoor Champion with her back-to-back victories in the 60-meter hurdles in 2008 and 2010. Tenaya Jones medaled for her country for the second time in her career and the second time in as many weeks after also winning the silver medal at the Pan American Games held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, back on July 21.

Two other LSU All-Americans nearly joined their fellow alumni on the medal podium at this year’s NACAC Senior Championships as former Tiger Kyron Blaise and former Lady Tiger Samantha Henry-Robinson finished in fifth place in their respective events. Blaise jumped a wind-aided 24 feet, 9 ¾ inches in the men’s long jump while Henry-Robinson sprinted to a time of 11.45 in the women’s 100-meter dash.
