Vale Costa Opens Up ITA Main Draw

Vale Costa Ousted in NCAA Singles Opener

WACO, Texas — Sophomore Joana Vale Costa fell 6-2, 6-1, to Clemson’s Joana Eidukonyte in the first round of the NCAA Championships Wednesday at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center.

The Lisbon, Portugal native finished the year with a 31-13 overall record. During the NCAA Team Championships, Vale Costa became the 15th player in school history to reach the 30-win mark.

It was the first NCAA Singles Championships for Vale Costa. She was just the sixth in school history and the first Lady Tiger since 2009 to be selected to the event.

The season ended for the Lady Tigers and it was the most successful under third-year head coach Julia Sell. LSU finished the season with a record of 20-11. This team is just the third in school history to reach the 20-win mark in a season.

Under Sell, LSU also reached the semifinal for the third time ever and the second round of the NCAA Tournament for just the sixth time in school history.
