BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU junior first baseman Chris Chinea on Sunday was named SEC Co-Player of the Week by the league office. Chinea shared the honor with Ole Miss first baseman Sikes Orvis.
Chinea, a Miami native, led the Tigers to a series win at South Carolina, which clinched the 2015 SEC championship for LSU. Chinea batted .462 (6-for-13) in the series with two doubles, two homers and six RBI. He was 4-for-5 in Game 1 with one homer, one double and three RBI, and he launched a two-run homer in Game 3 that gave the Tigers a second-inning lead they would not relinquish en route to the SEC title.
For the entire four-game week, Chinea hit .412 (7-for-17) with two doubles, two homers, seven RBI and four runs scored. He is LSU’s leading hitter this season, batting .374 with 15 doubles, 11 homers and 53 RBI.
Remarkably, Chinea had no home runs through the first 25 games of the season, but he has 11 dingers over the past 30 games.
