IOWA CITY, Iowa – Seniors Daniel Helm and Frank Greeff wrapped up their collegiate careers at NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday inside the University of Iowa’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
In his final swim, Greeff bested his previous school record in the 200 fly with a time of 1:42.87. Greeff just missed the consolation final in the event with a 17th-place finish.
“We couldn’t ask for much more from a performance standpoint,” LSU swimming coach Dave Geyer said. “Frank leaves the meet with two best times and lowered the school record in the 200 fly. The place is obviously disappointing. The swims were incredibly fast this session compared to what was needed to score last year.”
The senior concludes his career as a leader in out and out of the pool. Greeff was the men’s team captain for two years, school record holder in the 200 fly, a part of two school record relay teams, owns two other times on the top-10 list, and is a two-time NCAA Honorable Mention All-American.
“There are athletes that come into a program and leave their mark in ways beyond the record board,” Geyer added. “Frank has been instrumental in leading this program as a captain and building a culture we can be proud of.”
Helm competed for the final time on platform and finished 29th with a score of 313.65. In Helm’s five years, the Beaverton, Oregon native earned NCAA Honorable Mention All-American honors his sophomore year, set the school record on one-meter, set the second-best scores on three-meter and platform, and earned medals on one-meter and platform.
“I’m proud of Daniel for all he put into our program,” LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer said. “He has represented the university and his team well. Although things didn’t go as well as they could have here at NCAA’s, he can look back and be proud of all that he accomplished.
This marks the end of the 2014-15 season for the LSU Swimming and Diving team. The Tigers broke five school records on the year and look to continue improving going into next season. Seventeen men return for next season, including three with NCAA experience.
