Divers Claim Top Three Spots in Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Cassie Weil, Alex Bettridge and Madison Sthamann took the top three spots on platform to conclude the Tennessee Diving Invite Monday morning at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center.

Weil took home the win on platform with a final score of 275.55. Bettridge and Sthamann followed with scores of 267.75 and 238.40 respectively. Allie Alter also finished in 14th place with a score of 207.65.

“That was an exciting event,” LSU Diving coach Doug Shaffer said. “We are fortunate in that any one of those women have the opportunity to win that event anytime they compete in it. It’s great to have that energy and competition because they push each other and create an exciting environment.”

Daniel Helm finished with a score of 310.75 for fourth place. Andrew Suchla followed in fifth with a score of 284.90.

“Daniel struggled with a failed dive when he missed his handstand but came back strong,” Shaffer said. “He’s doing some new dives in competition so it was successful in that. This is Andrew’s first year diving platform and he’s really progressed over the course of the season.”

“Overall on the meet, we were successful in the areas that I thought we would be successful in,” Shaffer added. “We were also rocky in some areas. All of that will go away when we get into regular training and into the remainder of dual meet season. The ground work is there to have a really successful championship season.”

The full squad returns to action for senior day Saturday, Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. against Tennessee in the LSU Natatorium.
