Swimming Teams to Open New Year at SMU

ROCKWALL, Texas — The LSU swimming teams travels to SMU to take on the Mustangs Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Rockwall Aquatic Center.

“This weekend will be a challenge for us,” LSU swimming coach Dave Geyer said. “We are getting back into training right after the holidays. This is an early dual meet on the calendar to not only test our physical prowess but our mental tenacity as well.”

The Tigers have already faced off against SMU this season with both the men and women finishing ahead of the Mustangs at the Art Adamson Invitational. A group of the Lady Tigers also finished first at the SMU Classic in October.

This will be the third dual meet between LSU and SMU on the men’s side; the Tigers lead the series 2-0. This is only the second meeting on the women’s side between the two programs.

“SMU has some quality athletes on their roster and we know they will be facing some of the same physical challenges. It will be the simple process of getting our hands to the wall first,” Geyer added.

The 21st ranked women’s team (3-2, 1-2 SEC) is coming off of a third-place finish at the Art Adamson Invitational. Caley Oquist, Kara Kopcso and Amber Carter lead the Lady Tigers.

Oquist set her second school record in the 200 IM at the Art Adamson Invitational with a time of 1:57.32. The junior also finished sixth in the championship finals of the 100 and 200 back at the midseason meet.

Kopcso recorded her second school record, this time in the 400 IM. The sophomore also posted the second-fastest 200 IM in school history in the ‘B’ final.

Carter posted career-best times in the 50 free and 100 fly over the course of the three-day invitational. The senior finished eighth in the championship final of the 50 free and touched the wall second in the championship final of the 100 fly.

The men’s team is coming off a second-place finish at the Art Adamson Invitational. Senior Frank Greeff highlighted the invitational for the men. Greeff finished sixth in the championship final of the 200 IM (1:47.61), fifth in the championship final of the 100 fly (48.36), and second in the championship final of the 200 fly (1:45.09).

Alex Linge, Logan Rysemus and Brandon Goldman also highlight the men’s side. Linge touched the wall sixth in the championship final of the 100 free and 100 fly. Rysemus finished fourth in the championship final of the 100 back. Goldman also finished fourth in the championship final of the 400 IM.
