Notes on the Tigers
LSU finished the regular season 19-8 on the season and 14-4 in league play. LSU finished third in the league standings after being picked to finish fourth in the preseason. LSU finished six spots higher than it did last season. The Tigers finished the season on a three-match winning streak, closing the year winning 14 of its final 15 matches. LSU lost just twice in October and November. LSU tied its entire win total from last year, while having the fewest losses since 2010. The Tigers have now won at least 19 matches in five of the last six seasons. The Tigers will be going for their first 20-win season since 2010 this week. LSU was selected for the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, traveling to take on Oklahoma in the Eugene sub-regional. This is LSU’s 14th trip to the postseason in program history. The Tigers are 13-13 all-time in the tournament. Of their 14 trips to the tournament, five will have taken place or started on the West Coast. Fran Flory has led LSU to the postseason for the eighth time in the last 10 season. LSU is 4-2 in neutral site games this season. This will be the first meeting between LSU and Oklahoma since 1999, as LSU holds a 7-3 record against the Sooners all-time. If LSU moves on to the second round, it will only be the second all-time meeting against Oregon or Santa Clara in team history. Both the Ducks and Broncos have won the prior contest. LSU’s .241 hitting percentage if the season ended today would be the tenth highest in program history. The Tigers defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks in four to sweep the season series. LSU is 9-5 in four-set matches this season. When winning the first set, LSU is 13-1 on the year. The Tigers are 8-0 on the season when winning the first two sets, and 9-0 when up 2-1 in a match. LSU held the Gamecocks to a .115 hitting percentage, the seventh consecutive team to be held below .200 in a match. In league play alone, the Tigers held their opponents below .100 in four matches, and below .200 in 10. If LSU holds serve at .195, they will have held its opponents below .200 on the season for the 12th time since 2000. In conference matches, LSU hit .247, while holding their league counterparts to a .177 percentage. The Tigers had six aces against South Carolina, earning at least that many in a match for the 14th time this year. LSU had 77 digs, it was the seventh time this season that they’ve had at least 70 in a single match. Briana Holman and Cati Leak were named All-SEC, the first time LSU has had multiple players on the postseason team. Holman is the first player to earn back-to-back selections, as this is the first for Leak in her career. Holman ended the regular season with 15 or more kills in 16 matches, while hitting above .400 in 14 matches. She became the first player since All-American Brittnee Cooper in to earn more than 400 kills in a single-season, as is just two seasons she has a hitting percentage of .359 which is already second all-time on the career chart.
