BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Coming off of a weekend where she helped lead LSU to a 3-1 win over South Carolina in the regular season finale, LSU junior Katie Lindelow was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week the conference announced today.
In the final selection of the league’s weekly honors, Lindelow becomes the fourth Tiger this season to win one of the SEC’s weekly awards, while also becoming the second in the last three weeks to be named the defensive stopper of the week. She now joins Briana Holman, Gina Tillis, and most recently Haley Smith, as LSU honorees for the 2014 season.
The Mandeville, Louisiana, native saved one of her best performances for last in the Tigers’ four-set victory over the Gamecocks last Saturday to close LSU’s stellar regular season on a three-match winning streak, corralling a match-leading and season-high 22 digs against South Carolina. Averaging 5.50 digs per set, Lindelow had just six in the first two sets, she caught fire earning 16 in the final two, including having nine in the third which was the most for any player in the match, helping hold South Carolina to a .115 hitting percentage on the afternoon.
While lighting it up defensively, she was able to swing effectively as she captured her seventh double-double of the year by powering home 11 kills on a .258 hitting percentage, while connecting for three service aces and an assist as LSU hit .297 in the match. She also tied for the team lead in blocks with two, while not recording a reception error in 18 total attempts.
LSU opens play in the 2014 NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship on Thursday in Eugene, Oregon, taking on the Oklahoma Sooners in the first round of the tournament.
