AUBURN, Ala. – The LSU Men’s Tennis team backed up a strong first day of action at the ITA Regional Tournament with an even better second day on Tuesday in Auburn as three players qualified for the quarterfinals of main draw singles play. The Tigers also had three doubles teams qualify for the round of 16.
In singles action, Chris Simpson, Justin Butsch and Boris Arias all advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles draw on Friday. Simpson secured a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Auburn’s Joseph Van Dooren. Butsch posted a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Ricardo Jorge of Ole Miss. Arias knocked off Mississippi State’s Robin Haden in a three set match 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.
On the doubles side junior Tam Trinh and sophomore Eric Perez, sophomore Jordan Daigle and junior Boris Arias and junior Justin Butsch and Chris Simpson qualified for the round of 16.
“Three players advancing to the quarters is a good sign for this team going forward. We are ready for a challenge tomorrow,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown.
In consolation singles, both Simon Freud and Harrison Kennedy advanced to the round of 16 with victories Friday.
The Tigers will look to keep their winning ways alive on Saturday when both doubles and singles action will resume.
