DALLAS — Senior Amber Carter swam a career best time in the 100 fly to pace LSU to a 10 point lead at the SMU Classic. The Lady Tigers return to the Westside Natatorium for the final day of competition tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.
The 400-medley relay team of Caley Oquist, Colleen O’Neil, Carter and Leah Troskot instantly gained the momentum with the win in a time of 3:35.86, beating out SMU at the wall by one hundredth of a second.
“We stared off the meet with a nice win in the relay,” LSU Swimming coach Dave Geyer said. “It was a huge momentum boost to just barely get the win, which was something we didn’t do last week. There is some elite competition at this meet, and it’s great to see our girls taking advantage of it.”
All nine Lady Tigers contributed at least one top three finish on the first day of competition.
“The scoring sets up nicely for the depth of our roster. We have some strong events tomorrow so I’m hopeful we can get some wins and get out of here with the team win,” Geyer added.
In the 400 IM, Sophie Weber touched the wall second in the championship final with a time of 4:12.70. Kara Kopcso finished second in the consolation final with a time of 4:14.54.
Danielle Stirrat took the win in the consolation final of the 200 free (1:47.96). Megan Cox finished third in the championship final with a time of 1:47.72.
Carter narrowly touched the wall for second place in the 50 free championship final (22.87), while Troskot took the win in the consolation final (23.12)
After four swimming events, senior Alex Bettridge finished second on one-meter with a score of 296.96.
After the diving break, Carter set her career best in the 100 fly and Kopcso took first in the consolation final with a time of 54.02.
Oquist touched the wall second in the championship final of the 100 back with a time of 53.41. Stirrat also contributed a second place finish in the consolation final with a time of 55.70.
O’Neil finished third in the 100 breast with a time of 1:01.74.
The team of Cox, Stirrat, Kopcso and Troskot then finished the night with a third place finish in the 800 freestyle relay.
