Cross Country Tunes Up for SEC Meet in Alabama

BATON ROUGE – The LSU men’s and women’s cross country team are set to compete in their final meet of the regular season Friday at Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where the women will begin the Crimson Classic at 5 p.m. CDT and the men follow at 5:30 p.m.

The Crimson Classic will be the Tigers and Lady Tigers final showdown before racing the Southeastern Conference Championships, which will also be held at Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Competing in the men’s 8k race will be 33 teams, while the women will race against 37 other teams in the 5k race. After the men’s 13th place finish and the women’s 17th-place finish at last year’s Crimson Classic, the Tigers and Lady Tigers look to top last year’s performances.

In the Lady Tiger’s last outing in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the women took home ninth place at the Chile Pepper Festival. Junior Morgan Schuetz led the team finishing 29th out of 375 runners, and sophomore Chaiss Matthews was the second Tiger to cross the finish line for 60th place.

Seniors Andria Aguilar, Andrea Maxwell, sophomores Danielle Avery, Jenna Walker, Ashley Welborn, Elizabeth Dunning, and freshmen Hannah Deworth, Rebecca Little will compete with Schuetz and Matthews at the Crimson Classic.

The men finished 13th at the Chile Pepper Festival with junior Travis Pope leading the Tigers with a 60th-place finish, and senior Philip Primeaux crossed the finish line for a 69th-place finish.

Racing with Pope and Primeaux are seniors Philip Dempsey, Bryan Mutell, sophomore Joseph St. Cyr, and freshmen DC Lipani, Bryan Stamey and Jack Wilkes.

Following the Crimson Classic, LSU will have two weeks off before traveling back to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on Friday, Oct. 31, for the SEC Championships. The women’s 6k will begin at 9 a.m. CDT, followed by the men’s 8k race at 10 a.m.
