Women's Tennis Draws MSU in SEC Tournament

Lady Tigers Wrap Up Weekend at ITA Regional

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The LSU women’s tennis team wrapped up a successful weekend at the ITA Southern Regional in Tuscaloosa, Alabama with another strong showing on Sunday.

The team was paced by the effort of sophomore Joana Vale Costa who advanced to the semifinals in both the singles and doubles draws. Vale Costa, ranked 61st nationally, began the day by knocking off Ole Miss freshman Arianne Hartono in the singles A Draw quarterfinals by a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Vale Costa’s run eventually ended in the semifinals as she was defeated by Ole Miss senior Julia Jones 6-0, 6-3.

As for doubles, the team of Vale Costa and senior Noel Scott were also eliminated Sunday after making a run to the semifinals. Junior Pleun Burgmans and senior Emily Flickinger of Auburn defeated the LSU duo by a score of 6-2, 3-6, 10-8.

The Lady Tigers also dominated the singles B Draw on Sunday as the championship game was a showdown between two LSU freshman, Madara Straume and Amanda Atanasson. Straume ultimately came out on top of the three set match, securing the victory 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.

“Overall it was an extremely positive weekend for our team,” said LSU head coach Julia Sell. “We came in with goals for each player and I thought we not only accomplished those goals, but reached a new level of belief in ourselves.”

The Lady Tigers will be back on the court next October 30th in Rolling Hills Estates, California at the Jake Cramer Club invitational.
