GameDay: Football Looks to Rebound at Florida

BATON ROUGE – LSU will likely play two quarterbacks on Saturday as the Tigers head to Florida in search of their first Southeastern Conference win of the season.

Kickoff between the Tigers and Gators is set for 6:39 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on the SEC Network with Brent Musburger, Jesse Palmer and Maria Taylor on the call. The game can also be heard on the LSU Sports Radio Network and in the GeauxZone on LSUsports.net with Jim Hawthorne, Doug Moreau and Gordy Rush calling the action.

LSU brings a 4-2 overall mark and a 0-2 league record into the contest after last week’s 41-7 setback to top 5-ranked Auburn. Florida, who is coached by former LSU defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, is 3-1 overall and 2-1 in SEC action. The Gators scored 10 fourth quarter points last week to rally for a 10-9 road win over Tennessee.

Last year, LSU grinded out a 17-6 win over the Gators in Tiger Stadium. In its last trip to the Swamp in 2012, Florida used a second-half ground game to beat the Tigers, 14-6.

By all accounts, LSU is coming off a good week of practice and are in position to pick up its first conference win of the season.

“We have worked hard this week and have put together a really good plan,” Miles said. “I think we all realize that there are some things that we need to get accomplished in order to have success on Saturday. We have to play better and built on the positives. The veteran leadership of this team has been good; they are leading by example on the field and the younger guys are following suit.

“I think one of the keys for us will be to start fast. We need to make something good happen early. I think our quarterbacks both improved this week and are in position to make some plays. We need to go in there and play confident.”

Last week, true freshman Brandon Harris got his first career start at quarterback, going 3-of-14 for 58 yards and no touchdowns. He rushed for 36 yards, including a 32-yard burst just before halftime that put the Tiger sin scoring position.

Harris was lifted in the second half for sophomore Anthony Jennings, who started the first five games of the year. Jennings came off the bench to complete 5-of-10 passes for 84 yards. Miles said that he would not announce a starter until game time but that he expects both players to see action against the Gators.

The Tiger quarterbacks will be looking to get the ball to wide receiver Travin Dural, who leads the SEC in yards per catch at 26.1. In six games, Duran has caught 22 passes for 574 yards and 5 TDs. Florida also has a potent catcher in senior wide out Quinton Dunbar. The Miami native caught a six-year reception at Tennessee to extend his consecutive game catching streak to 32 games, third all-time at Florida and three games short of tying Ike Hilliard, who caught passes in 35 straight.

LSU has played 17 true freshmen through the first six weeks of the season, the most for any true freshman class under Coach Miles. On 422 offensive plays this year, true freshmen have accounted for 129 rushing attempts, 44 passing attempts and 31 receptions.

LSU will be looking to get another big game out of junior defensive end Danielle Hunter, who leads LSU with 37 tackles. Against Auburn, he had a career high 12 tackles, including seven solo, with 0.5 tackles for loss. It marked the first time and LSU defensive lineman recorded double-digit tackles in a game since Glenn Dorsey had 11 versus Ole Miss in 2006. Hunter’s seven solo stops are the most by an LSU d-lineman since Marcus Spears had eight at Arkansas in 2004.

The Tigers will return to Tiger Stadium next Saturday at 6:30 p.m. against Kentucky in the first of the final three home games of the 2014 season as LSU will face Kentucky and Ole Miss on back-to-back Saturdays before an open date Saturday prior to the Nov. 8 contest against Alabama.

LSU and Kentucky will kick off on the SEC Network at 6:30 p.m.
