PACIFIC PALISADES – LSU sophomore Joana Vale Costa was defeated in the first round of the 2014 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships qualifying bracket by a score of 7-6, 6-3, on Tuesday. Vale Costa squared off in what was a competitive match against Texas Tech sophomore Lynn Kiro.
“Kiro was extremely consistent and Joana never quite found her rhythm to play her usual attacking game-style,” assistant coach Tristan Venables said.
In her second match of the day, Vale Costa found her stride as she knocked off Miami senior Lina Lileikite of Miami 6-1, 6-4.
“Joana dug much deeper against Lileikite and displayed a much more business-like performance. Joana will take some lessons away from her first All-American tournament and look to have a great year ahead,” said assistant coach Tristan Venables.
Vale Costa will continue tournament play tomorrow at 1:45 p.m. CT.
