BATON ROUGE – Freshman tennis player Simon Freund and junior Boris Arias notched two victories for the Tigers at the 2014 ITA Men’s All-American Championships on Sunday at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Freund defeated junior Nikolas Papic from Fresno State by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Arias defeated senior Szymon Opieczonek from SIU – Carbondale, 6-2, 6-2. Both wins came in the pre-qualifying consolation round where Freund replaced fellow Tiger junior Andrew Korinek in the bracket.
“Boris and Simon had a solid day,” head coach Jeff Brown said. “Two wins for Simon on the weekend is a good step forward. Boris worked some things out and is getting on track. We are looking forward to qualifying play tomorrow with a lot of opportunities ahead of us.”
With pre-qualifying in the rear-view mirror, the Tigers are now focused on qualifying play where senior Chris Simpson (ranked No. 49 nationally), junior Tam Trinh and sophomores Jordan Daigle (No. 57 nationally), Eric Perez and Justin Butsch will compete.
Qualifying play is set to start on Monday, Sept. 29, with Daigle starting things off for the Tigers against junior Tin Ostojic from Wichita State at 9 a.m.
