Cross Country Teams Sweep LSU Invitational

BATON ROUGE — The LSU cross country teams dominated the 2014 LSU Invitational as the men scored 18 points and the women scored 22 points to defend their home course and earn first-place victories for the Tigers and Lady Tigers.

Senior Philip Primeaux and junior Morgan Schuetz finished first in the 5k course at Highland Road Park and were two of the 13 runners who finished in the top-10 for LSU.

The Tiger’s 18 point and the Lady Tigers’ 22 points were enough to defeat the Southeastern Lions who finished runners-up in the men’s and women’s race. The Lions finished with 72 points, while the Lady Lions finished with 77 points. Xavier Louisiana finished third in the women’s race with 92 points, and New Orleans finished third in the men’s race with 98 points.

The seniors lead the way for the Tigers. Primeaux crossed the finish line at 15 minutes, 16.92 seconds, while Philip Dempsey finished 26 seconds behind with a time of 15:42.32 for runner-up.

Finishing in fourth and fifth place in the men’s race was Bryan Mutell and Travis Pope. Mutell clocked 15:49.30, while Pope finished less than five seconds behind.

Freshmen Jack Wilkes, Joseph St. Cyr, DC Lipani each finished behind Pope for top-10 finishes for the men.

Schuetz finished with a time of 18:15.14 and sophomore Chaiss Matthews finished 19 seconds behind for third place to lead the Lady Tigers and continue the winning-streak at home for the third consecutive season.

Other top-10 finishes for the Tigers include seniors Andria Aguilar and Andrea Maxwell and sophomores Ashley Welborn and Danielle Avery. Aguilar finished fifth with a time of 18:41.35, as Welborn crossed the line 10 seconds behind for sixth place. Maxwell finished behind Welborn with a time of 18:59.68, and Avery rounded out the top ten with a time of 19:38.21.

“Both our men and women ran well,” cross country coach Khadevis Robinson said. “I feel that they put in the proper effort, and I am pleased with how they performed.”
