GameDay: Football Opens SEC Slate vs. State

BATON ROUGE – LSU hasn’t lost a football game to Mississippi State since October of 1999. The eighth-ranked Tigers will look to keep that streak intact on Saturday when LSU welcomes undefeated Mississippi State to Tiger Stadium for the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.

Kickoff between the Tigers and Bulldogs is scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN with Brad Nessler, Todd Blackledge and Holly Rowe on the call. The game can also be heard on the LSU Sports Radio Network with legendary Voice of the Tigers Jim Hawthorne, along with former LSU standouts Doug Moreau and Gordy Rush, calling the action (www.LSUsports.net/radioaffiliates).

Important Reminders for Fans

LSU and Mississippi State both enter the game with identical 3-0 records. It’s the first time since 1927 that both teams go into the game this deep into a season with an unblemished record. LSU is looking for a 4-0 start for the eighth straight year, while Mississippi State is trying to go 4-0 for just the second time since 1999.

LSU goes into the State game riding a 14-game winning streak over the Bulldogs, a run that dates back to a 45-38 overtime victory in 2000. LSU coach Les Miles is 9-0 against the Bulldogs, which includes last year’s 59-26 win in Starkville. Mississippi State last beat LSU in 1999, winning 17-16 in Starkville, and the Bulldogs haven’t won in Tiger Stadium since 1991.

“Our focus has been good this week,” Miles said after Thursday’s practice. “Our players understand the challenges that Mississippi State presents. It’s a different challenge for us this week. We like the matchup; we think we will play well.”

The game will be under the lights at Tiger Stadium where LSU is 43-3 in night games under Les Miles with a defense that has gone 31 straight possessions without allowing a point. The streak dates back to Wisconsin’s first possession of the second half in the season opener. LSU’s shutout streak spans nine quarters – its longest since 1962.

The game will be played before what is expected to be the largest turnout in LSU’s newly-expanded Tiger Stadium and several former special Tiger greats are expected to be on hand to welcome back to Tiger Stadium 87-year-old Y.A. Tittle, the four-time NFL MVP quarterback who played for the Tigers in the mid-1940s and who was MVP of the infamous ice storm Cotton Bowl game with Arkansas in January 1947.

Tittle came to Tiger Stadium with family and friends Friday afternoon to find a locker in the new LSU lockerroom all set up for the game with his jersey and replica helmet from the era at the waiting. He then went through the tunnel and out onto the field to get a look at a stadium that is much larger than in his playing days, again posing for pictures. A gallery is available at LSUsports.net as well.

Mississippi State, under sixth-year head coach Dan Mullen, is coming off a 35-3 win at South Alabama in its last game and has scored 49, 47 and 35 points in its three contests. The 131 points is the most scored by State through the first three games since scoring 146 in 1944. The Bulldogs can play defense as well, with 29 total tackles for loss which is tops in the SEC, No. 2 nationally and most among Power 5 conference teams.

For Anthony Jennings, the sophomore signal caller for the Tigers, it will be his first start in an SEC game, but Coach Miles feels he is ready for the challenge as the season takes another step forward.

“He’s started a bowl game, and he’s started some games around here now,” Miles said. “So, he’s more comfortable. He’s prepared, and we think he’s ready to go.”

LSU has played 17 freshmen through the first three weeks of the season, the most for any true freshman class under Miles, and true freshmen have accounted for seven of the 15 LSU touchdowns so far (RB Darrel Williams 3, RB Leonard Fournette 2, WR Malachi Dupre and QB Brandon Harris 1 each).

The Tigers will be at home for a fourth straight week next Saturday against New Mexico State (6:30 p.m., SEC Network) out of conference, while Mississippi State will have the weekend off before hosting Texas A&M on Oct. 4.
