Hurdles Alumni Advance to IAAF Semifinals

MOSCOW, Russia – Two former LSU Track & Field national champions cruised into the semifinal round of the 400-meter hurdles during Monday’s morning session at the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Athletics as Jamaicans Isa Phillips and Nickiesha Wilson will return to the Luzhniki Stadium track during the evening session on Tuesday.

Phillips posted one of the 10 fastest times of the day in the qualifying round of the men’s 400-meter hurdles as he crossed the finish line in 49.57 seconds for second place in the fifth preliminary heat. He followed only Trinidad & Tobago standout Jehue Gordon (49.52) across the line in the heat as the top-four finishers automatically advanced to the semifinals.

Phillips’ 49.57 opener was the ninth-fastest time of the day in the men’s event as he will now look to qualify for his first career World Championships final in in fourth career appearance.

Wilson followed by running the 13th-fastest time of the day in the qualifying round of the women’s 400-meter hurdles as she crossed the finish line in third place in the second preliminary heat with a time of 55.75. She took third place in the race behind Czech Republic’s Zuzana Hejnova (55.25) and Ukraine’s Anna Titmets (55.50).

This also marks the fourth career World Championships appearance for Wilson, who owns a career-best fourth-place finish in the women’s 400-meter hurdles final in her championship debut in 2007.

The semifinal round of the 400-meter hurdles will be held during Tuesday’s evening session with the women’s event being held at 10:05 a.m. CT followed by the men’s event at 10:40 a.m. CT.
