BATON ROUGE – The LSU volleyball team picked up victories over Southeastern Louisiana and Tulane before dropping a three-set decision to defending national champion Texas to open its spring season over the weekend at the Houston FAST Tournament.
“We had a productive weekend stepping onto the court for the first time,” head coach Fran Flory said. “Overall, it was a good start with some great direction for the areas that we need to address. We are a work in progress having only one person playing at the same position they did last fall. I was proud that we were able to establish a fairly stable level of play.”
“Our offensive and defensive systems as well as our efficiency improved throughout the day,” Flory continued. “Our team played hard and worked well together which is always a good thing to establish right from the beginning. We expect our young team to make some significant strides this spring, and this tournament was a step in the right direction.”
LSU returns to the action at the Rice Spring Invite on April 13 in Houston before wrapping up the spring season at the Lone Star Classic College Showcase on April 20 held at the Dallas Convention Center Arena.
The Tigers will bring back eight letterwinners in 2013 highlighted by Desiree Elliott, a two-time All-SEC selection. LSU’s seven-year run atop the SEC Western Division came to a close last season. The streak was the second-longest in SEC history only behind Florida’s 14-year atop the SEC Eastern Division from 1995-2008.
