Nominee for SEC Offense & Freshman Player of the Week

Bianka Bell, Fr., Tampa, Florida
Bell was a key contributor to LSU’s 4-1 week as the Tigers stayed in sole possession of first place in the SEC Western Division standings. Bell started the week with a two-homer performance in game one of the Georgia Southern doubleheader, a 40-win program and NCAA Regional squad from last season. The last time a LSU player hit two home runs in a game was Anissa Young versus Fordham on February 26, 2011. Bell followed that up and provided the game-winning RBI double during the third inning of the second game versus Georgia Southern. The Florida native added her third dinger of the week, a two-run shot, versus South Carolina.

Notes on the Tigers
No. 13 LSU turned in a 4-1 week as the Tigers swept a mid-week doubleheader from Georgia Southern and took two of three games from South Carolina over the week. After three weekends of conference play, LSU has a 7-2 mark to maintain sole possession of first place in the SEC Western Division standings. The Tigers had their nine-game winning streak come to a close, but have won 13 of their last 16 outings since March 1. For the week, LSU connected for seven home runs to bring its season total to 29 roundtrippers more than double the amount of last season’s team total. Rikki Alcaraz, Bianka Bell and Tammy Wray powered home multiple homers on the week. Bell cranked a pair of dingers during LSU’s 8-0 win over Georgia Southern to start the week, while Wray belted two longballs in the Tigers 6-0 victory to clinch the South Carolina series. Before Wray, the last LSU player to hit two home runs versus a SEC opponent was Rachel Mitchell against Arkansas on April 27, 2008 at the original Tiger Park. She came away with a career-best four RBIs. Sandra Simmons secured hits in all five of LSU’s games to bring her batting average to its highest point since the UNLV game on February 22. LSU’s pitching staff was stellar en route to three shutouts and a 0.85 ERA for the week. Rachele Fico posted two wins to bring her career total to 70 which enabled her to move past Ashley Lewis (1999-2001) for fourth place on LSU’s all-time list. In her lone start of the week, Ashley Czechner fired a one-hit shutout versus South Carolina. She has upped her mark to 8-0 for the season and tossed a shutout in two of her last three outings. Meghan Patterson secured her fourth win of the season with a complete game effort during game two of the Georgia Southern doubleheader.  LSU steps out of SEC play this week and caps its 10-game homestand versus Southeastern Louisiana [Tuesday – 7 p.m.] before traveling to face No. 25 South Alabama [Wednesday – 7 p.m.]. The Tigers will welcome Samford [Saturday – 1 p.m.] to Tiger Park for a rare non-conference weekend doubleheader.
