Eighteen Named to SEC First-Year Honor Roll

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – LSU placed 18 student-athletes on the 2012 Southeastern Conference First-Year Honor Roll Thursday as announced by the league office.

The LSU track and field program headlined the list with five student-athletes represented, including pole vault standout Andreas Duplantis. Not only did Duplantis qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships as a freshman, he also recently competed in the pole vault final at the World Junior Championships held in Barcelona, Spain.

LSU’s golf teams added three selections highlighted by Madelene Sagstrom on the women’s side. She notched NCAA All-America Honorable Mention status after the Lady Tigers claimed a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships to equal the program’s best-ever finish in the event.

The gymnastics, soccer and softball each added two student-athletes on the list.

Gymnast Rheagan Courville took home First-Team All-America honors on vault and in the all-around in 2012, en route to All-SEC First-Team and All-SEC Freshman-Team recognition. Lloimincia Hall also shined for the gymnastics team as she claimed Second-Team All-America honors on floor and captured the 2012 SEC Floor Exercise Title, becoming the first LSU freshman to win the conference floor crown.

Soccer’s Alex Arlitt was an impact newcomer as an All-SEC Freshman-Team pick. She started all 22 matches as an attacking midfielder, defense midfielder and right back. The Houston, Texas, native helped lead LSU’s defensive unit to eight shutouts and a 1.24 goals against average as the Tigers garnered their fourth SEC Western Division Championship.

Dylan Supak started 43 games as LSU softball returned to the Women’s College World Series for the first time since 2004. She came away with Tiger Invitational along with Purple & Gold Challenge All-Tournament Team honors during non-conference action.

Chris Sciambra picked up 11 RBIs over 22 games as the starting centerfielder for the LSU baseball team before being diagnosed with a season-ending neck injury during the Auburn series.  He is expected to make a full recovery and return to the Tigers for the 2013 season.

A total of 608 student-athletes from all 12 conference institutions were named to the 2011-12 SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll.

The 2011-12 SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2011-12 academic calendar. Any student-athlete who participates in a Southeastern Conference championship sport or a student-athlete who participates in a sport listed on his/her institution’s NCAA Sports Sponsorship Form is eligible for nomination to the Academic Honor Roll.

Each student-athlete must 1) have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship or a letter winner; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.

A total of 2,581 student-athletes around the league earned Academic Honor Roll recognition in 2011-12.
