BATON ROUGE – Ashley Applegate takes fans behind the scenes of the LSU softball program in this week’s edition of “Blogging from the Berm.”
Applegate has hit safely in her last three outings as LSU’s leadoff hitter and picked up her first RBI of the season last Saturday during a 16-0 five-inning rout of Mississippi Valley State to conclude the Purple & Gold Challenge.
The Tigers open SEC play with a Wednesday doubleheader versus No. 20 Auburn before welcoming Mississippi State to Tiger Park for a three-game series starting Friday.
First pitch for Wednesday’s twin bill is slated for 5 p.m., and it marks the program’s annual “Gold Game” along with Student Point Night.
The games will have streaming video and audio in the Geaux Zone on LSUsports.net. Both games also will be broadcasted live on 104.9 FM in Baton Rouge. Patrick Wright and Kent Lowe will call the action.

“Hey Tiger Fans,
This week we open up SEC play. We are looking forward to Wednesday’s doubleheader with Auburn and our first SEC weekend series versus Mississippi State! Conference time is always an exciting time of the year because this is what we have worked hard for all year long. All of those fall practices, conditioning and weight lifting workouts were for this.
We are excited and ready for this week. We need to keep going with the momentum we have built up from our five wins last week. We swung the bats great last weekend against Nicholls State, Troy and Mississippi Valley State. I thought we did a great job of scoring runs early which allowed us to set the tempo. We need to continue to do that to be successful this week.
Coach Torina and the entire staff have been working tirelessly to prepare us for our opponents. As Coach says, “We deserve to win because we work harder than our opponents.” We are confident and focused going into the first game against Auburn. One pitch, one out, one inning and one game at a time. We will give them our best game, without a doubt.
As a senior, my emotions are different than in seasons past. I know that my career is coming to an end, and this will be the last time I put on the Purple and Gold uniform for SEC play. I am looking forward to SEC play because I know that these moments will be some of the best of my life. I am going to give everything I have and leave everything on the field. When I am done, I want to look in the mirror and know that I did everything I could to help my team succeed at the highest level. I am so grateful for having this opportunity, and I can’t thank you guys enough!!
Hope to see you this week at Tiger Park!”
Geaux Tigers,
Ashley
