Notes on the Tigers
Sophomore right-hander Kevin Gausman improved to 2-0 this season with a victory over Appalachian State on Friday … Gausman, a 2012 preseason all-American, fired seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts … Gausman, who has now thrown 12.1 consecutive scoreless innings, lowered his cumulative ERA to 0.69 and opponents are batting just .170 against him … freshman right-hander Aaron Nola turned in an outstanding effort in relief of Gausman on Friday, allowing no runs and no hits in two innings with four strikeouts … Nola has recorded eight strikeouts in five innings this season, and opponents are batting just .111 against him … the Tigers’ No. 2 starter, sophomore right-hander Ryan Eades, has a cumulative 0.79 ERA in 11.1 innings with three walks and 13 strikeouts and opponents are hitting just .135 against him … junior right-hander Nick Goody posted two solid relief outings last week, firing three scoreless innings with no walks and three strikeouts … LSU’s pitching staff has a cumulative 2.14 ERA through seven games as the Tigers have surrendered just 15 earned runs in 63 innings … opponents are batting only .210 against the LSU staff, which has recorded 68 strikeouts and 16 walks … sophomore catcher Ty Ross is LSU’s leading hitter through seven games, batting .400 (6-for-15) with three RBI … junior first baseman/outfielder Mason Katz is hitting .333 (7-for-21) and has two doubles, one triple and a team-high six RBI … second baseman Casey Yocom led the Tigers at the plate in four games last week, batting .333 (5-for-15) with one double and one RBI … freshman outfielder/infielder Jared Foster also hit .333 (3-for-9) last week with two RBI … senior third baseman Tyler Hanover batted .364 (4-for-11) in the Appalachian State series with one run scored.
