BATON ROUGE – ULL’s Christi Orgeron and LSU’s Rachele Fico secured the first Louisiana Sports Writers Association [LSWA] Softball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week awards of the 2012 season Wednesday as voted upon by the state’s sports information directors.
A senior outfielder for the Cajuns, the Sun Belt’s Preseason Player of the Year was named Louisiana Classics MVP over the weekend. She went 9-for-11 at the plate highlighted by five extra base hits and 12 RBIs. The New Orleans native also scored nine runs. Oregon’s best performance of the weekend was an impressive 4-for-5 effort with a homer and six RBIs during a 19-4 rout of No. 24 Tulsa.
A junior pitcher for the Tigers, Fico fired 13 shutout innings and won both of her decisions in the circle en route to Tiger Classic All-Tournament Team accolades. Opponents were held to only three hits and notched a .073 hitting clip versus Fico. The junior right-hander shined in a two-hit performance and mowed down 10 batters in a 1-0 extra-inning victory over Penn State, a 2011 NCAA Tournament team.
It’s the fifth weekly award for Fico and fourth for Orgeron from the LSWA.
