Gymnastics Holds First Fall Intrasquad Meet

BATON ROUGE – The LSU gymnastics team conducted the first intrasquad meet of the fall Friday in the gymnastics practice facility inside Maddox Field House.

The Tigers continued preparation for the 2012 season by performing routines and competing on all four apparatuses during the intrasquad.

D-D Breaux, entering her 35th season as head coach of the Tigers, came away impressed with the team’s performance.

“I saw a super effort on all events, and we showed a high degree of difficulty on floor and vault,” Breaux said. “The team is not yet deep enough on bars. That is the event that definitely needs to show immediate improvement.”

Breaux praised the performance of junior Shelby Prunty who is still working her way back from wrist surgery early in the summer.

“Shelby led off in three events in 2011, and she is setting the pace again this year on beam and floor,” Breaux said. “Wrist surgery has slowed her down on bars, but she is progressing nicely.”

Sophomore Sarie Morrison, a 2011 All-SEC performer, also stood out during the intrasquad as she drew praise from Breaux.

“Sarie showed why she was a dominate force for the Tigers in 2011. She had ankle surgery this summer and is not yet 100 percent on floor, but she was beautiful on vault, bars and beam,” Breaux said.

Breaux also singled out the performances of the freshmen class as they have made their presence known during the fall.

“The three freshmen were definitely there to compete, and they took the opportunity to show their individual strengths in the all-around,” Breaux said. “This will be a very competitive team with the addition of local elite gymnast Rheagan Courville, Lloimincia Hall and Randi Lau.

“The freshmen have added quality depth to our 2012 team, and we are already looking forward to our next intrasquad opportunity.”

The team’s second intrasquad is set for Nov. 18 as the Tigers prep for the 2012 season opener Jan. 6 at the Cancun Classic in Cancun, Mexico.
