COSTA MESA, Calif. — Senior Neal Skupski paired up with English player Chris Eaton to narrowly defeat his LSU teammates Mark Bowtell and Chris Simpson today at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center in California.
Bowtell and Simpson took an early lead and won the first set 6-4. However, Skupski and Eaton battled back to take the second set 6-4. With the match on the line, the teams entered into a 10-point tiebreaker where Skupski and Eaton were able to narrowly escape with a victory, 10-8.
“Today we had a real good match,” assistant coach Danny Bryan said. “Both teams had a lot of chances to win and I was really impressed with play on both sides. It was definitely exciting to watch.”
Doubles main play will continue on Thursday.
Tomorrow, Skupski will also take on 2011 NCAA singles champion and USC tennis player Steve Johnson for what promises to be a monumental singles match. The time is yet to be announced.
