BATON ROUGE – Seven LSU gymnasts were honored as Scholastic All-Americans, the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) announced Wednesday.
Casey Duvall, Lainie Fleming, Janelle Garcia, Ashley Lee, Shelby Prunty, Staci Schwitkis and Sarah Zoldos were named NACGC/W Scholastic All-Americans.
It marks the first time since 2002 that at least seven Tigers received the All-America honor.
Fleming and Zoldos led the way with perfect 4.00 grade point averages in microbiology and biological sciences, respectively.
A redshirt freshman in 2011, Fleming repeated as a Scholastic All-American as she returned from a wrist injury that sidelined her in 2010 to compete on bars in the SEC Championship and NCAA Regional.
Zoldos competed in three events as a freshman, focusing on vault, bars and beam by the season’s end, and she wrapped up a solid freshman campaign with 9.80 scores on bars and beam at the NCAA Regional in Athens, Ga.
Duvall received her first Scholastic All-America honor after earning a 3.69 GPA in biological sciences.
Garcia earned her second Scholastic All-America award with a 3.55 GPA in communication disorders, and last season she competed consistently on beam and also contributed on floor.
Lee, a 2010 All-America on vault, received her first Scholastic All-America honor by earning a 3.67 GPA in sport administration. She led the team on vault last season with a 9.844 season average, including a career-high tying 9.9 against Arkansas.
The award was the first for Prunty as she posted a 3.78 GPA in sport administration last year, and she contributed all season as the leadoff competitor on bars, beam and floor.
Schwitkis was an integral part of LSU’s Super Six qualifying team in 2009, but a severe back injury forced her to take a medical hardship prior to the 2010 campaign. The All-America honor is the first of her career as she tallied a 3.61 GPA in kinesiology.
The NACGC/W annually awards Scholastic All-America honors to student-athletes who finish the current academic school year with a 3.5 grade point average or higher.
The team will open fall practice in September in preparation for the season opener on Jan. 6 at the Cancun Classic.
