BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU pitcher Kevin Gausman was named Monday as the SEC Freshman of the Week by the league office. The honor marked Gausman’s second SEC Freshman of the Week designation in the past three weeks.
Gausman delivered a brilliant performance on the mound Friday versus Tennessee, recording a complete-game shutout of the Volunteers. He limited Tennessee to just four hits while recording no walks and seven strikeouts.
Gausman retired the final 13 Volunteer batters in a row to clinch the win, and his effort marked the first shutout fired by an LSU pitcher since Louis Coleman blanked Arkansas in Fayetteville on May 2, 2009.
Gausman’s gem was the first shutout by an LSU true freshman since the championship game of the 1993 College World Series when Brett Laxton blanked Wichita State to lift the Tigers to their second national title.
