Women’s Tennis Beats Colorado, Then Southern

BATON ROUGE – The LSU women’s tennis team defeated Colorado and Southern by identical 6-1 scores on Wednesday at W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium.

With the victories, the Lady Tigers bettered their overall record to 9-7. Colorado dropped its overall record to 3-10 while Southern fell to 8-6.

“I am pretty happy with our performance today,” said LSU women’s tennis coach Tony Minnis. “I thought we came out sloppy in doubles play against Colorado, but we played very well in singles. I am also pleased with our performance against a good Southern team. I am especially proud of the performance of Kylie Adamek. She had a great day today.”

Whitney Wolf and Kaitlin Burns got things started for the Lady Tigers against Colorado in doubles play. The LSU duo built an early lead on the Buffalo tandem of Ania Anuszkiewicz and Kristina Schleich and went on to an 8-3 win.

After the Lady Tiger pair of Ebie Wilson and Kylie Adamek fell to Winde Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio of Colorado 8-2 on Court 3, LSU’s Keri Frankenberger and Yvette Vlaar clinched the doubles point for the Lady Tigers with their 8-4 victory over the Buffalo doubles team of Abbie Probert and Michala Hedelund Jensen.

In singles play, Adamek picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Buffalo freshman Kristina Barber to lead things off for the Lady Tigers. Vlaar quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Anuszkiewicz on Court 5 to put the Lady Tigers up 3-0.

Wilson clinched the overall match for LSU moments later by knocking off Janssens 6-0, 6-2. The victory was the sixth-consecutive for the sophomore from Mobile, Ala., and her 11th in her last 12 matches.

After receiving a battle in the first set before coming away with a 7-5 set win, LSU’s Burns had little trouble with Probert in the second set as she went on to a 7-5, 6-0 win to give the Lady Tigers their fifth point.

Wolf closed out the match for LSU by topping Schleich 6-2, 6-4 on Court 1 to complete the overall match. Frankenberger defaulted due to injury while leading 7-5, 2-1 against Manzi Tenorio to give the Buffaloes their only point.

Against Southern, Frankenberger and Vlaar collected their second doubles victory of the day as they defeated Jo’Vonna Gaines and Carlista Mohammed 8-4 on Court 1.

Adamek teamed with freshman Hayley Everett against the Jaguar duo of Demetria Woods and Lisbeth Cuevas Castaneda on Court 3. The Lady Tiger pair got out to a 4-2 advantage and held off the Southern twosome to win by an identical 8-4 score and give the doubles point to LSU.

Burns and freshman Alexus Coats made it a clean sweep for the Lady Tigers as they topped Lois Alexis and Kathryn Curtis by the same 8-4 score on Court 2.

Coats opened up singles play by defeating Southern’s Castaneda 6-0, 6-1 on Court 4. Vlaar closed out her match against Woods shortly afterward, winning 6-0, 6-0 to put the Lady Tigers up 3-0.

Adamek collected the fourth point to win the overall match for LSU by beating the Southern senior Gaines 6-3, 6-2. Wolf and Burns followed suit as the Lady Tiger junior Wolf topped Mohammed 6-4, 6-2 on Court 1 and Burns knocked off Curtis by a 6-3, 6-2 score.

Everett fell to the Jaguar sophomore Alexis 7-6, 6-2 on Court 6 to give Southern its lone point and close out the night.

LSU returns to SEC play when the Lady Tigers host No. 7 Georgia on Friday at 3 p.m.
