Men’s Swimmers Set for NCAA Championships

BATON ROUGE — LSU swimmers Hannes Heyl and Craig Hamilton will represent the men’s swimming and diving team at the 2011 NCAA Men’s Championships, which begin Thursday in Minneapolis.

The meet will run through Saturday in the University of Minnesota’s Aquatic Center. The prelims commence each day at noon (CDT), while the finals begin at 7 p.m.

Live results for each session can be accessed here. Live video of the finals on Friday and Saturday will be available on www.ESPN3.com.

“We are excited for Craig and Hannes’ opportunity this year,” co-head coach David Geyer said. “Both are in position to score and reach All-America status. The staff believes their extra week of preparation compared to the women will have a huge benefit.”

Heyl is making his fourth consecutive trip to NCAA’s after earning an invitation to the meet with his top time in the 100-yard butterfly. An eight-time NCAA All-American from Grosslehna, Germany, Heyl claimed the bronze medal in that race at the SEC Championships last month with his personal best of 46.55 seconds.

The senior is seeded 15th in the 100 fly and is seeking his second career All-America accolade in the event. In addition, he will compete in the 100 backstroke (47.15) and 100 freestyle (44.32).

Hamilton qualified for his second NCAA meet with his time in the 1650 free. The sophomore secured his spot at the championships with his school-record mark of 15:02.64 at the University of Georgia’s Bulldog Invitational on Feb. 27.

The Edinburgh, Scotland, native also registered a new school record in the 500 free (4:22.17) at SEC’s and will race in that event Thursday.
