ATHENS, Ga. – No. 1 Georgia used a pair of big innings to hand the No. 21 LSU softball team a weekend sweep and a 12-0 five-inning defeat Sunday at Jack Turner Stadium.
“We knew coming into the weekend that we would have to play our best softball to be successful against a very tough Georgia team that plays extremely well at home,” head coach Yvette Girouard said. “Unfortunately, the Tigers weren’t up to the challenge. We have a talented group of players, and we’ll have to regroup after this rough stretch. There’s still plenty of ball left to be played in the season.”
Georgia’s (20-1, 2-0 SEC) offense was fueled by a pair of RBIs from Alisa Goler, Ashley Pauley, Ashley Razey and Laura Trout. The Bulldogs also received a solid outing from Morgan Montemayer in the circle. She tossed a two-hit shutout and recorded 10 strikeouts to move to 9-1 on the season.
Ashley Langoni and Juliana Santos posted hits for LSU (15-10, 0-5 SEC), while Rachele Fico surrendered five runs in her lone inning of work to drop to 5-7.
Georgia loaded the bases right out of the gate in the opening inning as Taylor Schlopy and Goler drew walks sandwiched between a Megan Wiggins double.
After a wild pitch scored Schlopy, Razer connected for a two-run double to centerfield. Four batters later, Trout platted two runs on a single through the left side to make it 5-0.
The Bulldogs made the most out of two LSU errors and a passed ball during the third inning to add seven runs. Goler, Pauley and Wiggins supplied a quintet of RBIs for the final margin of 12-0.
LSU steps out of SEC action Wednesday and heads to Southern Miss. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. and fans can follow the action via live stats on LSUsports.net along with in-game updates via the program’s social media pages at www.Facebook.com/lsusoftball and www.Twitter.com/LSU_Softball.
