Diver Vieke Sixth on Day 1 at Regional

AUSTIN, Texas — LSU junior diver Matt Vieke delivered sixth-place in the men’s one-meter competition to lead the Tiger diving efforts Friday at the NCAA Zone ‘D’ Regional in the University of Texas’ Jamail Center.

Vieke followed his prelim score of 327.25 with 334.15 points in the final to tally a combined mark of 661.40.

The Indianapolis native was one of four LSU men’s divers in the one-meter to finish in the top 11.

Junior Brian Gemberling took eighth with a two-round total of 637.25. Freshman Daniel Helm earned 10th with a 618.50 score, while fellow freshman Sean McKinney came in 11th (593.00).

On the women’s side, sophomore Rebecca St. Germain advanced to the three-meter final, placing 18th overall with a combined score of 550.35. Fellow sophomore Elle Schmidt finished 26th in the prelims, recording a mark of 252.65.

“I’m really proud of Matt, who dove really well today,” co-head coach Doug Shaffer said. “The men overall had a nice day on the one-meter with all four Tigers placing in the top 11.

“Becca did some good things on three-meter, but she was inconsistent today. She’ll look to rebound on one-meter tomorrow, which is her strongest event.”

Texas A&M divers Grant Nel and Cam McLean and Texas diver Drew Livingston automatically qualified for the NCAA Men’s Championships after finishing in the top three of the one-meter competition.

In the women’s three-meter, Minnesota divers Kelci Bryant and Margaret Keefer, Houston’s Lacey Truelove, Iowa’s Veronica Rydze and Texas A&M’s Lorena Lujan each placed in the top five to earn bids to NCAA’s.

The women will take off from the one-meter Saturday with the men switching to the three-meter. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. CST.
