BATON ROUGE – LSU’s Ralston Turner, who recovered from a stress reaction in his right foot, to record double figure scoring in seven of his last eight games was named Tuesday to the Coaches All-SEC Freshman team announced by the Southeastern Conference Office.
The team selected by the league coaches was made up of eight players and freshmen from six different schools were selected.
Turner is the first LSU player to make the Coaches All-Freshman team since Anthony Randolph in the 2008 season.
Turner averaged 12.8 points per game in 26 games, missing the first five games of SEC play after injuring his foot in the final half of the Jan. 2 Virginia game. Turner averaged 11.5 points per game in the 11 conference games he participated in.
He was one of eight freshman players to average in double figures overall and one of seven in league plays. Turner finished 21st in overall league scorer. He is 10th in the league in three-pointers made per game at 1.8 per game.
Turner had three games of 18 points in his run of seven games – vs. Florida, vs. Vanderbilt and at Georgia.
The other members of the Freshman team were: Trevor Releford, Alabama; Patric Young, Florida; Terrence Jones, Brandon Knight and Doron Lamb of Kentucky; Bruce Ellington of South Carolina; and, Tobias Harris, Tennessee. Jones was chosen as the Freshman of the Year.
The Tigers left Tuesday afternoon for Atlanta and this year’s Southeastern Conference Tournament. The team will meet with media members on Wednesday at the Georgia Dome at 3:30 p.m. CST and then will have a one-hour practice on the Georgia Dome floor beginning at 4 p.m. CST. LSU, the sixth seed in the Western Division, will meet Vanderbilt, the Eastern Division’s No. 3 seed, in the final game of the first day beginning at approximately 9 p.m. CST Thursday.
The game will be televised on the SEC Network and broadcast of the LSU Sports Radio Network (WTGE New Country 100.7 FM the Tiger in Baton Rouge).
