BATON ROUGE – The LSU women’s tennis team bounced back from a disappointing home opener on Saturday to beat Xavier (New Orleans) 7-0 Sunday afternoon at W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium.
The Lady Tigers bettered their record to 2-5 while the Gold Nuggets dropped to 2-5.
“It feels good to get a win,” said LSU women’s tennis coach Tony Minnis. “We have played a tough schedule to this point. Everyone came out today and played hard, and it was great to get this win to help our confidence.”
In doubles action, Keri Frankenberger and Yvette Vlaar teamed up and got LSU off to a great start by shutting out Xavier’s Carmen Nelson and Amber Brown 8-0.
Lady Tigers Kylie Adamek and Ariel Morton closed out their match against Gold Nugget sisters Melissa and Nicole DeLoach shortly after, winning 8-1. Xavier forfeited its doubles match on Court 3 to Alexus Coats and Hayley Everett.
Singles play featured more of the same as Frankenberger knocked off Nelson in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 for her first singles win of the spring season. Adamek kept LSU rolling with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Xavier freshman Nicole DeLoach.
On Court 2, Vlaar got back on track, collecting her first singles win in four matches by sinking Amber Brown of Xavier 6-1, 6-0.
A couple of LSU freshmen saw their first action of the spring season on Sunday. Everett defeated Gold Nugget senior Ashley McGill 6-0, 6-0 while Coats bested Xavier’s Melissa DeLoach 6-3, 6-1.
The Gold Nuggets forfeited their singles match on Court 6 to LSU’s Morton.
