Track Blog: On Your Mark with Marcus McGehee

Track Blog: It’s Championship Series

As a leader of the LSU men’s track and field team, senior pole vaulter Marcus McGehee will provide his insight into the LSU Track & Field program throughout the 2011 season as the Tigers and Lady Tigers join the national championship chase once again. Check back each week as McGehee provides a behind-the-scenes look into the program from an athlete’s perspective in competition, in the classroom and in the community.

It’s Championship Season!!

This week marks the beginning of “championship season” for the Tigers and Lady Tigers as we start to close out the 2011 indoor season. In an effort to boost morale among my teammates, I am going to post a motivational video for the jumps group, in addition to two interviews I shot this week with both Walter Henning and Kimberlyn Duncan.

I do apologize for isolating just the jumps group, but I did this video before I started the blog just as a fun side project for our jumpers. However, I know Max Lauro, one of our All-American throwers, has created several other motivational videos that I’m sure he would be happy to share with the public.

The men’s and women’s teams will head back to Fayetteville, Ark., for the third time in a five-week span this season for the SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships in hopes of bringing back the crown.

In my opinion, this is one of the more talented groups of individuals that we’ve had at LSU since I joined the program back in 2007. I am not the only person that feels like the chances of success this weekend are great. It seems like every week I talk to a teammate and the discussion inevitably leads to our chances for a win at the conference meet.

Walter Henning told me this past weekend after our home meet was over that the projected standings with this meet would be within a few points between teams like Arkansas, Florida and ourselves. So, this week will be one of the most exciting meets that I’ve had the pleasure of competing in.

It is my hope that when my teammates read this blog and see how close it’ll be, it will put that extra bit of determination in them to win a conference championship this weekend.

“All of our groups are looking extremely strong going into the SEC meet. With that being said, I am very excited to see how each of our individuals perform and support their teammates,” Henning said.

As usual please stay tuned for next week’s edition of “On Your Mark,” as well as follow LSU Track and Field’s social networking sites for up to the minute coverage of the championship meet. As a post script, please suggest both the Facebook and Twitter sites to your friends and family, as we are trying to surpass Oregon as the most followed track program in the country.

Geaux Tigers!!
