CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The LSU women’s tennis team was once again lifted by a pair of doubles wins on the final day of the UVA Winter Invitational.
Sophomore Keri Frankenberger and junior Whitney Wolf paired to collect their third and most impressive upset of the tournament, knocking off the 16th-ranked Virginia combo of Maria Fuccillo and Rashmi Teltumbde, 8-2, in the A Doubles draw.
Freshman Alexus Coats gathered her second consecutive doubles victory on Monday, this time teaming with senior Kylie Adamek to defeat Katie Gater and Clare Spooner of Virginia, 8-3, in the D Doubles draw.
Singles play was not as kind to LSU on Monday as the Lady Tigers failed to win a singles match for the first time this weekend.
Wolf was upset by Virginia’s Emily Fraser in a hard-fought three-setter, 5-7, 6-0, 7-5, in the A Singles draw. The loss was the first of any kind so far this spring for the Pride, La., native as she started the season a combined 5-0 in singles and doubles matches.
Coats won the first set against Hana Tomljanovic of Virginia, but Tomljanovic battled back to take the final two sets and come up with the win, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, in the G Singles draw.
The Lady Tigers will take two weeks off from competition before opening up the spring dual-match season Feb. 2 with home matches against Texas Tech at 12 p.m. and Prairie View A&M at 5 p.m. Admission is free to all LSU home matches.
