BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The LSU women’s tennis tandem of Yvette Vlaar and Ariel Morton won their third doubles match in two days to advance to the consolation doubles final of the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships on Sunday at the Samford Tennis Center.
After capturing two doubles victories yesterday, the freshman duo took down the ULL pair of Audrey Woodland and Julie Mazanova in a tight match, 8-6, and will move on to face Auburn’s Olivia Bennett and Jackie Kasler tomorrow.
In singles action, junior Whitney Wolf and sophomore Keri Frankenberger were both eliminated from the main draw after dropping quarterfinal matches to nationally-ranked opponents.
Wolf fell to 20th-ranked Kristi Boxx of Ole Miss, 2-6, 1-6, while Frankenberger was unable to move past Alabama’s Alexa Guarachi, who is ranked No. 38 in the nation, falling in straight sets, 2-6, 2-6.
“Whitney and Keri had a nice tournament,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “They just played good players who played really well today. I am also proud of Yvette and Ariel for fighting back through the back draw.”
Vlaar and Morton will take the court tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. CT in the doubles consolation finals.
