BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — LSU women’s tennis junior Whitney Wolf and sophomore Keri Frankenberger each advanced to the singles quarterfinals of the 2010 USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships with victories Saturday.
Wolf took down Alabama’s Alex Clay is straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, to move on to face Kristi Boxx of Ole Miss for the second time this season on Sunday. The Pride, La., native upended Boxx, who is ranked No. 20 in the country, in their first matchup at the SEC Coaches’ Classic.
Frankenberger defeated Auburn’s Olivia Bennett in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, and will take on Alabama’s Alexa Guarachi on Sunday.
“I was very impressed with Whitney and Keri,” head coach Tony Minnis said. “Keri played as good as I’ve ever seen her play, and Whitney was at another level today. Hopefully, they’ll continue to play well tomorrow.”
In doubles, the duo of Frankenberger and Wolf played well but were unable to move past Alabama’s Mary Ann Mcfarlane and Antonia Foehse, who held on, 8-6. The tandem of Yvette Vlaar and Kaitlin Burns was also unable to advance, falling to Emily Newton and Maria Arechavaleta of Auburn.
Freshman Hayley Everett earned a victory on the afternoon, surging past Mississippi State’s Vivian Pietraroia, 7-6, 2-6, 10-8, in the consolation bracket of the Flight B singles draw. However, the Mandeville, La., product fell to Rafaela Wenzel (Jacksonville State) later in the afternoon, 6-2, 6-0.
The doubles tandem of Ebie Wilson and Ariel Morton also enjoyed a successful second day with a win over Vivian Polak and Letha Gaigher (UL-Monroe), 8-3.
Day 3 of the regional at Samford University will begin at 9 a.m. (CT) on Sunday.
