EVANSTON, Ill. – Three LSU women’s tennis freshmen captured singles victories on the final day of Northwestern’s Wildcat Fall Invitational on Sunday.
Freshman Yvette Vlaar continued her flight B singles dominance, taking down Western Michigan’s Miloslava Shustova in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to notch her third straight-set singles win of the weekend. The Weert, Netherlands, native defeated DePaul’s Kelsey Lawson 6-1, 6-2 on Saturday and took down Natalie Edell of Northwestern 6-1, 6-3 on Friday.
Ariel Morton, a freshman from Houston, Texas, cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Western Michigan’s Rachel Denny in the flight C singles bracket.
In Flight A, walk-on freshman Hayley Everett also found success, taking a tough three-set match over Minnesota’s Elliana Kantar 1-6,6-4, 6-3 to earn her first singles victory of the tournament.
“We started out a little rough, but we showed a lot of character to fight back,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “This tournament was a great chance for the freshmen to see the caliber of players they will play this season.”
The Lady Tigers will take the court again in two weeks at the ITA Southern Regionals in Tuscaloosa, Ala., which runs Oct. 21-24 at the University of Alabama’s varsity courts.
