LOS ANGELES — LSU women’s tennis player Whitney Wolf came up short of advancing to the final round of the pre-qualifying draw at the 2010 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Saturday, falling to Florida’s Joanna Mather in her second match.
Wolf, who is ranked No. 122 in the national singles rankings, got off to a great start, upending her third nationally-ranked opponent of season with an impressive straight-set victory over No. 84 Jelena Durisic of North Carolina, 6-4, 6-2.
However, No. 98 Mather of Florida came from behind to defeat the Lady Tigers’ junior in three sets, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2, in the second round later that afternoon.
Sophomore Keri Frankenberger, who earned a late entry into the singles pre-qualifying draw, fell to SMU’s Heather Steinbauer in a tight match, 7-6 (1), 7-5.
“It was nice to see Whitney beat somebody she had lost to previously,” assistant coach Lisa Jackson said. “She played a very clean, hard match. In her second match, she got off to a good start, but Mather fought back. She competed hard all the way through but came up a little short.
“Keri played a really tough match and competed really hard but just came up a little short. However, I’m pleased with the way she fought.”
Wolf and Frankenberger will turn their attention to doubles as the duo is set to compete in the qualifying doubles bracket, beginning Tuesday.
