ATHENS, Ga. – The LSU women’s tennis team lost to No. 14 Georgia, 6-1, Sunday in Athens, Ga., at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts as the match was moved indoors due to inclement weather.
“Georgia is one of the best teams in the country. Our team came out and gave the effort, but we just didn’t come out with the win,” said head coach Tony Minnis. “We need to regroup and get ready for Alabama on Friday.”
Georgia (10-4, 6-0 SEC) jumped ahead with an early lead as it swept in doubles. Bulldogs Cameron Ellis and Yvette Hyndman defeated Hannah Robinson and Keri Frankenberger 8-3 on court two. UGA clinched the doubles point on court one as ninth-ranked Chelsey Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist beat Whitney Wolf and Kaitlin Burns 8-6.
The Bulldogs completed the doubles sweep on court three as Nicole Kantor and Kylie Adamek fell to Naoko Ueshima and Lara Fakhoury 8-5.
In singles, No. 13 Gullickson ousted Wolf 6-1, 6-2 on court one. On court two, 25th-ranked Gilchrist retired her match to Burns as the match provided the only point for the Lady Tigers.
After moving the match indoors, Lady Tiger Kantor fell short to Hyndman on court three as the Bulldog clinched the overall match 6-2, 6-3.
LSU’s (6-12, 1-5 SEC) Frankenberger snapped her win streak as she fell to Ueshima 6-1, 6-2 on court four. Wilson dropped her match to Ellis on court five 6-2, 6-3.
On court six, Adamek gave a great fight but was not able to outlast Fakhoury 6-0, 2-6, 6-3.
The Lady Tigers will return home to W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium to host Alabama Friday and Auburn Sunday.
