BATON ROUGE – Northwestern State’s Ashleigh Kuhn and LSU’s Rachele Fico picked up Louisiana Sports Writers Association [LSWA] Softball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week accolades Wednesday as voted upon by the state’s sports information directors.
A freshman infielder for the Lady Demons, Kuhn strung together a quartet multi-hit efforts en route to a .625 hitting clip for the week. She also tallied RBIs in four games and upped her batting average by nearly 100 points for the season. In the second inning of the middle of the Sam Houston State series, Kuhn ripped two doubles to fuel an eight-run second inning.
A freshman pitcher for the Tigers, Fico was an instrumental part of LSU’s 5-0 week. She picked up two wins and a save over 11.0 shutout innings to extend LSU’s winning streak to a program record and league high 21 games. She picked up the final out along with stranding runners at second and third base to secure LSU’s 4-3 middle game triumph over Auburn. In her lone start of the week, Fico added a six-hit shutout of Auburn during the series finale and has strung together 20.2 consecutive scoreless frames along with nine consecutive victories since opening weekend.
It’s the second weekly award for Fico and first for Kuhn from the LSWA.
