BATON ROUGE — After sweeping the doubles point, the LSU women’s tennis team picked up its first Southeastern Conference victory of the season as the Lady Tigers beat Mississippi State, 6-1, Friday at W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium.
“We played really well. I’m happy for the girls. We’ve lost some tough matches in the past month, but they’ve kept a tremendous attitude,” said head coach Tony Minnis. “They’ve improved a lot and are getting better and better. I’m so proud of their effort and the win.”
In doubles, the Lady Tigers’ top tandem Whitney Wolf and Kaitlin Burns finished first on court one as they dominated Olesya Tsigvintseva and Natalia Mayuk 8-2. Senior Nicole Kantor and freshman Ebie Wilson clinched the doubles point on court three as they defeated MSU’s Valeriya Makarycheva and Danielle Terpko 8-2.
On court two, LSU’s (3-8, 1-2 SEC) Hannah Robinson and Keri Frankenberger completed the doubles sweep as they took down Radka Ferankova and Mariia Ryzhova 8-2.
In singles, Wolf knocked off Tsigvintseva 6-1, 6-3 as she finished first on court one. Wilson, a Mobile, Ala., native, notched a win over Makarycheva 6-1, 6-3 on court five. The win marked Wilson’s first dual match and SEC win.
On court four, Frankenberger played a fantastic match as she clinched the overall match 6-2, 6-2.
With the Lady Tigers leading the match at, 4-0, Lady Bulldog Ferankova gave Burns quite a challenge, but it was not enough to stop the 5’9 freshman. Burns took out Ferankova in a competitive two-set duel 6-4, 6-2 to give LSU a 5-0 advantage. The Lady Tiger leads the team in dual match wins with eight.
Lady Tiger Kantor captured an impressive win over Mayuk 6-1, 7-5 on court three.
MSU’s (8-3, 1-2 SEC) Terpko took the first set over junior Kylie Adamek 7-6(6), but Adamek responded by taking the next set 6-4. After a hard fought battle, MSU earned their first and only point on court six as Terpko won the third set tiebreaker 10-7.
LSU will face Ole Miss and Southern Sunday beginning at noon CST.
