Swimmer Hamilton Receives SEC Honor

BATON ROUGE — For the second-straight week, a member of the LSU swimming and diving teams has been honored by the Southeastern Conference as men’s swimmer Craig Hamilton was named the SEC Male Freshman of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

Hamilton led the Tigers with a pair of victories in individual competition against defending national champion Auburn last Friday.

“Craig is definitely performing well for this time of the season,” LSU head coach Adam Schmitt said. “I know he will look to continue to improve with each meet. He will face some more tough competition in our next meet, but if he continues to race, he will have good results.”

A native of Edinburgh, Scotland, Hamilton swam to victory in the 1000-yard freestyle with a personal best of 9 minutes, 22.42 seconds, which is the fifth-fastest time in school history. That mark also ranks eighth nationally and fourth in the conference. In addition, he took first-place in the 500 free with a mark of 4:34.79.

The freshman remains undefeated in both races this season as he claimed victories in both the 500 and 1000 free against Tennessee on Oct. 16.

Hamilton is the fourth LSU athlete to receive a national or conference honor in the past two weeks. Sophomore Mary Beck was named the Counsilman-Hunsaker National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week, and freshmen Andrei Tuomola and Rebecca St. Germain were tabbed the SEC Freshmen of the Week following the men’s and women’s meets against Tennessee in mid-October.
