MACON, Ga. — After two rounds of competition at the third-annual Brickyard Collegiate Championship, the LSU men’s golf team finds itself in sole possession of sixth-place in the 15-team field with a 36-hole score of 9-over par 585 at the par-72 layout at the Brickyard at Riverside Golf Club.
The Tigers, who opened the championship with a 5-over 293 in Saturday’s opening round, improved one stroke in Sunday’s second round with a 4-over 292 to finish the day in sixth place at 9-over 585.
Sophomore Josh Jones led the way for LSU with a season-low round of even-par 72 in the second round, while juniors Clayton Rotz and Andrew Loupe fired matching rounds of 1-over 73 toward the team’s final total. LSU also received a 2-over 74 from sophomore Sang Yi and a 3-over 75 from junior John Peterson.
Rotz has proven to be LSU’s top performer through two rounds of action as he sits in a tie for 15th place at even-par 144. Rotz has put himself in position to earn his first Top 10 finish of the season.
Peterson, who teed off in Sunday’s second round in a tie for ninth place overall, follows two strokes back in a tie for 28th place at 2-over 146 for the championship. Loupe is now in a tie for 35th place at 3-over 147, while Jones is in a tie for 47th at 5-over 149 and Yi is in a tie for 52nd place at 7-over 151.
While competing as an individual at this year’s event, sophomore Austin Gutgsell has posted a two-round total of 5-over 149 to sit in a tie for 47th place overall, including a 3-over 75 in the second round.
The Augusta State Jaguars are running away with the team championship as they will carry a 13-shot lead into Monday’s final round after firing team scores of 6-under 282 and 7-under 281 for a 36-hole score of 13-under 563. Clemson and Chattanooga follow in a distant second place with matching 36-hole scores of even-par 576, while Georgia is fourth at 3-over 579 and Virginia Commonwealth is fifth at 8-over 584.
Georgia’s Russell Henley also holds a commanding lead in the race for the individual crown after firing a 7-under 65 in the second round for a two-round total of 10-under 134. Georgia Tech’s John Tyler Griffin follows five shots back in second place at 5-under 139 for the championship.
The Tigers are paired with Georgia and Virginia Commonwealth in Monday’s final round and will tee off from the front nine beginning at 8:20 p.m. CT. Live scoring of the final round will be provided by Golfstat and can be found online by logging on to www.golfstat.com.
