BATON ROUGE — A bruising running back and a star sprinter from LSU and linebackers from ULM and Tulane earned the Louisiana Sports Writers Association football player of the week honors announced on Monday.
Charles Scott, the senior running back from LSU, won the offensive player of the week award, while his speedster counterpart Trindon Holliday was named the special teams player of the week. Tulane’s Shakiel Smith and ULM’s Theo Smith tied for the defensive player of the week honor.
Scott rushed for a season-best 95 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries in LSU’s 20-13 win over Georgia. Both touchdown runs came in the final three minutes as LSU overcame two fourth quarter deficits to win in Athens for the first time since 1987. His second TD was a 33-yard scamper that put the Tigers up for good with less than a minute to play. He also was named the Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Holliday led LSU with 124 all-purpose yards and his 40-yard kickoff return late in the fourth quarter setup LSU’s game-winning touchdown, giving the Tigers the ball at the Georgia-38-yard line with just over a minute left in the contest. He also had a 49-yard return earlier in the fourth quarter.
On defense, both Smiths are linebackers for their respective schools and both the Wave and Warhawks were winners on Saturday.
Shakiel Smith of Tulane, a freshman from New Orleans, played an instrumental role in helping the Tulane defense overcome Army’s option attack in a 17-16 road win. Smith had a career-high 10 tackles, including seven solo stops and came up with two tackles for lost yardage.
Theo Smith, who also is from New Orleans, had a career night for the Warhawks in their big win over Florida International with 12 tackles (seven solo), a tackle for loss, a pass break up and the first interception of his career. The interception came in the fourth quarter with ULM up 13 and FIU driving into Warhawk territory.
